This class focus on the rich musical traditions of Latin America.
Some rhythms and styles we will explore are:
Brazil – Ijexá, Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova, Forró, Maracatu, Ciranda, Xote, Baião
Uruguay / Paraguay / Argentina – various Milongas, Zamba, Tango, Candombe, Chacarera, Chamamé, Paraguayan Polka, Guarania, Chaya
Chile / Andes – Huayno, Saya, Cueca, Rin, Refalosa
Colombia / Venezuela / Caribbean – Salsa, Joropo, Cumbia, Pasillo, Merengue, Bolero, Son Cubano, Cha-Cha-Chá
We will play traditional songs from these genres as well as music by Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Buena Vista Social Club, Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra, Inti-Illimani, among others.
The classes will be guided by two methodologies: one using sheet music and pre-arranged scores, and the other employing collective arrangement work, where the ensemble collaboratively develops parts and explores by ear.
Each session will include a brief historical overview of the rhythms and their cultural contexts, connecting the music to its roots and evolution across Latin America.
There will also be room for improvisation and creative exploration, if the group is interested.
The class is for intermediate and advanced players. You don’t need experience with Latin American music to join the class.
Instrumentation: bass, percussion, drums, guitar or acoustic guitar, one vocal, piano or keyboards and a woodwind or brass instrument.
At Rytmisk Center, one lesson is 55 minutes, including a 10 minute break. The weekly sessions in this class are two lessons each.
The class can play a final concert at the Summerparty on May 29-30 2026.
